What are the best steps when building a branding strategy? Our next guest is Amber Horsburgh, a musical and digital strategist. Amber is expert in developing strategy for artists and music brands. She has worked as a marketing executive to majors, indies & brands including Interscope, Atlantic, Downtown Records, Spotify, SoundCloud & YouTube Music.

Amber runs a music strategy newsletter called Deep Cuts, which is read by 15,000 music industry professionals globally. This led to her recently founding The School of Deep Cuts. The course is the sum of every tool, case study, best practice and quick tip she has learned and implemented throughout her career in helping to break artists.  Amber has worked in NYC, LA, Seoul & Melbourne.

Partnering with Byta.com on this month’s event is The Push, an Australian youth music organisation based in Melbourne.  The Push is at the forefront of emerging trends, delivering a range of programs that are responsive to Australia’s future music industry leaders, artists and audiences.

This is a new monthly online event that will be presented in two parts:

  1. A Workshop: Tips & insights for tomorrow’s artists & music industry leaders with Byta founder, Marc Brown
  2. An In-depth interview with Amber Horsburgh, offering insights into strategies and resources to build an audience and find ears for your music.

About the Event

This series is designed to deliver the knowledge to enable tomorrow’s artists and industry leaders to better manoeuvre their way through the music ecosystem. Providing a fun and insightful Q&A along the way!

#HowWeListen Live: In Conversation will be hosted by Byta’s founder, Marc Brown, whose deep music business background and digital audio knowledge have helped him deliver unique insights to audiences from Tallinn to Toronto. Marc is a former label owner, A&R, manager and radio plugger.

Event Format

#HowWeListen Live (part 1):
The workshop will introduce industry insights that Marc has picked up from his work in A&R departments, running his own radio promotion company, plus years of experience managing artists and significant large scale projects. Some of the topics he will touch on include artists teams, timelines and connecting the web of the music industry. Plus, most importantly, tips on what you can do yourself to better increase the chances of your success. 

#HowWeListen In Conversation (part 2): 

Each event will feature an in-depth one-to-one conversation. This time the conversation will look into strategy, how to develop an audience and move a career in music forward making as few mistakes as possible along the way. Marc’s guest, Amber Horsburgh, will dig into what you can do yourself, how to properly implement and develop an effective game plan, and what you should get help with while navigating the music ecosystem?

After working in A&R at the legendary London indie Creation Records, then at Alan McGee’s Poptones, Marc started his own boutique UK radio promotion company off the back of his success with The Hives. For over 10 years Marc worked with an impressive list of indie rock luminaries including Wilco, Bloc Party, Conor Oberst/Bright Eyes, Spoon and Refused as well as legends such as Tom Waits, Yoko Ono, Booker T and Mavis Staples.

Marc currently lives and works in Stockholm, Sweden.
