Andy Halliday

Phantom Limb Touring

Andy is an independent booking agent handling bookings for artists who want to be themselves; performing to broadly emerging audiences, touring UK and EU.

Where are you based?

Southampton, UK.

Where do you work? What do you do?

Phantom Limb Touring. I work across the UK, EU and sometimes other countries depending on the project. I book tours for independent and experimental artists that appeal to emerging audiences.

What are you listening to?

claire rousay, Joseph Shabason, Penya & Rắn Cạp Đuôi

How do you discover new music?

I guess a large proportion is shared with me by colleagues at Phantom Limb, but I do definitely get maybe 25% from stumbling on stuff via social networks, and maybe a proportion by simply reading through the press, Pitchfork, Bandcamp weekly, newsletters etc and mixes etc… every now and then by accidentally seeing someone live…

What formats do you usually listen to? LP, CD, Cassette, Digital, Streaming Services? Why?

I have loads of CDs but don’t really listen to them. Same with tapes really… I listen mostly to downloads of stuff I am sent, or streams off BandCamp. I consciously don’t listen to anything on Spotify… I buy vinyl, I buy T shirts, I get free DLs from artists I work with and label promos, I have friends that send me distro lists, I get lost on YouTube and SoundCloud, I follow links from people, stumble on YouTube… it goes on…

Where do you do most of your music listening?

Just ‘everywhere’ – at home yes, on headphones yes, in the car yes, in front of the computer while working etc..!

How do you find and listen to pre-release music?

I only really know I am listening to pre-release stuff when it is sent to me before it is released. I guess I do hear things pre-release sometimes on blogs etc, but I don’t necessarily know that is the case at the time!

What are your frustrations with listening to music digitally? Any benefits?

I will do all of the stuff to hear things, but I am a little hesitant to download stuff unless it’s from someone I know and trust… or I have arranged to receive that already… mostly it’s easiest and best for everyone (I think) if it’s hosted on SoundCloud with a bio so I can share it if I want (with close allies etc – never publicly obviously)

How do you keep track of everything you are listening to?

…I literally just remember stuff I like!

Do you tip other people off to new music? How?

Yes, I share with colleagues – like word of mouth basically.

Anything you want to “promote”?

Yes there’s loads… Ichiko Aoba is playing in Southampton which is a really exciting show as not much unknown rising international stuff comes through town and plays in nice venues like MAST… Gwenifer Raymond is also on that bill so it’s a pretty ambitious lineup but basically will sell out so that’s been a really cool thing to pull together… 20 tix left at this moment… remaining ones here.

I love the recent acts I’ve been booking, claire as previously mentioned, Matchess, BLK JKS, the recent stuff on Orange Milk is super exciting… many live streams in the experimental sphere have been really good… it’s tricky remembering EVERYTHING haha…
