Lateef Martin AKA Abdul Lateef

Miscellaneum Studios

Forged in the roiling deeps of arcades, comics and cartoons, multi-disciplinary artist Lateef Martin builds worlds through illustration, cosplay, video games, music and upcycling.

Where are you based?

Tio’tia:Ke – Montreal

Where do you work? What do you do?

I occupy the command throne on the bridge of Miscellaneum Studios. My role? I build worlds through a channel of ADD.

What are you listening to?

I often wander the halls of The Mars Volta. The groovescapes of Khruangbin, the rocky ranges of Princess Nokia, exoplanets of Sammus and the empires of  Czarface and MF DOOM. And FKA Twigs. Between the quantum shifts of Amon Tobin and Animals As Leaders.

How do you discover new music?

Basement Soul, seasoned spinner of wax provides a link to much of my current interest-base. Music Is My Sanctuary has also served as a stream of delicious sounds, funk, soul, RnB, DnB, house, hip-hop world, techno and more. The lethelium bike harp is where I find some of the most intriguing music, hiding between seconds and strings.

What formats do you usually listen to? LP, CD, Cassette, Digital, Streaming Services? Why?

The intricate woven patterns of 1s and 0s known as ‘EMPEETHRIE’. Remarkably light. And easy to transport and share.

Where do you do most of your music listening?

On the bridge. Through the intercom. Throughout the entire ship.
Otherwise on foot, with these tiny portable concert halls that fit in my ears.

How do you find and listen to pre-release music?

I wistfully peer into more tender years where the tips of my fingers laid plain my thoughts on new music, issued to me for critique by the Montreal Mirror magazine. As well, the troubled Nightlife Magazine. Alas now I wait like most, but have grown to enjoy the antici…pation.

What are your frustrations with listening to music digitally? Any benefits?

Streaming platforms are double edged. Maestro Pharrell received a little over 6300OWD (Old world Dollars) for 105 Million plays of “Happy”, the most prolific auralvirus on the planet. Yet, streaming allows me to easily reminisce with the OST of India Jones and the Temple of Doom or a rollicking Meat Beat Manifesto tune from the days of yore.

How do you keep track of everything you are listening to?

With the metal and plastic brain oscillating under the helm.

Do you tip other people off to new music? How?

I spread the gospel of fresh beats on a prominent argument platform.

Anything you want to “promote”?

Master of Arts in Science and Technology Studies Sammus MCs against the vain and the forces of Motherbrain quite mightily. Iraq-A-Fella Narcy raps beats into desert sand. Soul astronaut HAWA charts new territory. My crew Abdul Lateef and the Distraction Machine perform cyclepunk survivalcore. Presently, I am exploring solo storytelling through crafting and playing lethelium bike harps and other bike instruments.
