Groover

It was during my first festival at the age of 16 that I had the revelation: 'I want to work in the music industry!' For the past 5 years, I have been realizing this dream as a Communications Manager at Groover in Paris. Helping independent artists shape their careers is my daily motivation. Recently, I relocated to Montreal to immerse myself in a new and inspiring music and cultural scene :)

Where are you based?

Between Montreal & Paris.

Where do you work? What do you do?

I’ve been working for 5 years as a Communications Manager at Groover, a platform that allows artists to promote their music.

What are you listening to?

With my job at Groover, I get to listen to a lot of independent artists, and I’ve become addicted to it! I always loop the latest musical gem I find until I discover another one… Currently: Mercure – Olivier Faubert & thaïs 🙂 I’m very open to many styles, but I’m constantly seeking out melodies that really touch me: Patrick Watson, C. Tangana, Peter Cat Recording Co, Ben Böhmer…

How do you discover new music?

  1. Thanks to Spotify: I have a routine of listening to the ‘Discover Weekly’ playlist every Monday and ‘Release Radar’ every Friday. The combo is a goldmine!
  2. At my job: Many tracks are sent through Groover, allowing me to discover new artists daily across all styles! Especially when I’m curating the Groover Radio playlist.
  3. Concerts/festivals: The best of the best! What a pleasure to find myself in the crowd for an artist I don’t know, and they captivate me from start to finish. I’ve recently moved to Montreal and am discovering the Quebec scene: it’s crazy!
  4. Not to forget: my friends!

What formats do you usually listen to? LP, CD, Cassette, Digital, Streaming Services? Why?

I listen to music every day, mainly through streaming! I enjoy the freedom of being able to listen to music wherever and whenever I want.

I like to buy vinyl records when I’m a big fan of an artist and also to support the independent artists I know. But I admit it’s more for the support and not for listening: I’m lazy, and I prefer streaming, which is more instantaneous.

“It’s amazing to think that you can compose a track in your room, share it, have your friends share it, and make it go viral on social media!”

Where do you do most of your music listening?

I listen to music every day at different times, most often with my AirPods. It can be while walking to work, while working to motivate me on a task, while running on my treadmill, in my car, etc.

How do you find and listen to pre-release music?

On Groover, we receive a lot of tracks in preview! Artists love getting early feedback from music professionals, and music curators love getting exclusives. On my side, I can see the artists who are receiving the best feedback and we’ve created a playlist to highlight them: it’s called the HOT 10 Groover! If you want to discover tomorrow’s artists, give it a listen!

What are your frustrations with listening to music digitally? Any benefits?

We have so many opportunities to quickly listen to lots of songs/playlists that sometimes I feel like I’m getting bored and not discovering anything new. It’s probably related to the fact that I listen to music very often while doing other things. It’s important not to forget to set aside dedicated moments to just listen to music.

But the positive side of the digital era is giving anyone a chance to make it! It’s amazing to think that you can compose a track in your room, share it, have your friends share it, and make it go viral on social media!

Moreover, it’s really cool to be able to listen to any song from any year, by any artist, with just a few clicks, we’re really lucky!

How do you keep track of everything you are listening to?

Playlists all the way!! Since 2011, I’ve been creating a playlist each year with all my discoveries. I love immersing myself in each year by listening to the tracks. Every year has its own mood, its discoveries, and I love diving back into them to reminisce and recall memories.

Do you tip other people off to new music? How?

I like to play my playlists in the background when I’m with my friends! People who like what I share subscribe to my Spotify playlists 🙂 Recently I’ve been trying to break into TikTok by sharing tracks while I’m brushing my teeth it’s called @Teethmesomemusic 😅

Anything you want to “promote”?

I recommend it to all artists looking to be heard, and to all professionals seeking a simple and effective way to discover music, to check out Groover here.

The platform allows artists to receive guaranteed feedback on their music and enables music professionals to be compensated for their time and listens!
