Stuart Vallans

Marshall Live Agency

Stuart Vallans has been in the music industry for over 15 years. Stuart is Head of Marshall Amps' new Live Agency: MLA. Representing artists and booking live tours across the UK and Europe.

Where are you based?

Nottingham, UK (you reds!)

Where do you work? What do you do?

Marshall Amplification, I’m the head of the new Marshall Live Agency!

What are you listening to?

Physics House Band, CRASHFACE, Midsleep, Converge

How do you discover new music?

Just chatting to folks, the majority of people I talk to on a regular basis all have great tastes in music so having a great network of credible filters helps!

What formats do you usually listen to? LP, CD, Cassette, Digital, Streaming Services? Why?

Streaming all the way. I love the idea of vinyl but the convenience of streaming just fits in with a busy family life

Where do you do most of your music listening?

At work when I’m sent new songs to listen (although I prefer silence when working!). Other than that the commute in the car to Milton Keynes from Nottingham (pre lockdown!) is where I do a lot of my proper listening

How do you find and listen to pre-release music?

I get sent a lot of it from promoters, managers, other industry folks etc. Again having those credible filters means I know the music being sent me is going to be good. The same goes the other way, I’m always sending new tunes out to people that I think will enjoy it, all about sharing!

What are your frustrations with listening to music digitally? Any benefits?

The lack of liner notes, I used to love looking through the thanks and credits on albums (I still know every word to Spit It Out by Slipknot thanks to the physical album)

“I used to love looking through the thanks and credits on albums”

How do you keep track of everything you are listening to?

The search function on Spotify, plus I tend to remember the good stuff. I’ve got a Spotify playlist for all the really belting songs I get sent. Tracks need to be really good to stick out though, I get so much sent through that they really need to be exceptional to make the playlist.

Do you tip other people off to new music? How?

Always, I just send Spotify / SoundCloud / Bandcamp links

Anything you want to “promote”?

Polar States, Make Friends, Gallus, Elijah Miller and CRASHFACE, all great bands, great people and have some belting tours being announced soon
