I have an office in my loft in Montreal and I spend a lot of time looking at screens!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n As I write this I have headphones on and I\u2019m listening to Marcin Wasilewski<\/a>\u2019s band, he is a pianist and composer in the ECM<\/a> stable. Very thoughtful music that creates a nice contemplative vibe, which is what one wants when asked to answer questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mostly by word of mouth.\u00a0But when I am working on a project as an artistic director I\u2019ll seek out specific styles or artists to insure that the show touches lots of tastes, and regions and creates a narrative.\u00a0That is a really lovely path towards discovery.\u00a0Many times it will be through other musicians or managers’ recommendations, but it\u2019s very effective because people know my taste from past work together.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n I ask people I respect all the time \u2013 \u201cwhat are you listening to\u201d. That is a good way in, it could be a label head or a niece. <\/p>\n\n\n\n I still listen to a lot of CDs because they sound way better than MP3 or Wav files.\u00a0We have two wonderful sound systems so it is always a pleasure to really dive into a great sounding record and crank it. At the computer, I listen with headphones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I see digital music services as out right intellectual property theft.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n At home and work \u2013 which are the same place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Labels or managers send it to me. I remember once Donald Tarlton aka Donald K Donald just finished a debut record for the Montreal artist Antoine Gratton<\/a> and I fell in love with the record and licensed the whole thing for a tv show I was producing.\u00a0They were shocked and delighted because I think I was like the first person they sent it to and to get such a warm reaction right out of the box was very encouraging. To this day Antoine Gratton merits that kind of reaction \u2013 even 6 records deep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I find the whole digital thing very frustrating. iTunes library management is off the hook and dysfunctional and what really irritates me is I believe they have done that intentionally so we will just give up and subscribe to the music service.\u00a0I see\u00a0digital music services as outright intellectual property theft, for an indie artist it has destroyed all of our revenue from recorded music. It is so absurd that it is really hard to even fathom how this was allowed to happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Usually while muttering \u201cgoddamn, fucking iTunes\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\nWhat are you listening to?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
